by Kristin D. Jones
I light the menorah
or the Yule log
the lights all blur,
between Shamash
lighting Asherah’s branches
and a rebirth of a god-sun
I become more cosmopolitan
or I drink one
the lines all blur,
between religion
and nature
between Carrie Bradshaw alcohol
and an openness to the mysteries
We celebrate the dark
or welcome the light
the meanings all blur,
between dead and alive
between descent and ascent
Mistletoe
and flakes of snow;
Oak king
and carol sing;
evergreen
or things unseen
a miracle happened there
where?
I straddle these worlds
stretching my legs
like the longest night of the year
I spin from one tradition to the next
like a dreidel
like a dervish
I curl into a ball
wishing for that Festivus
for the rest of us
and it the gaze out my window,
the watching of a coyote,
who runs
circles around pine trees
that reminds me to also run
run
run
like lords a leaping,
embrace it all
in dance and song
